Shuesday: White After Labor Day?

For the record, the FG is in favour of the no white after Labor Day rule (I know, you're shocked - shocked! - to hear it.) Although the rule was clarified 'round here last week to mean no white below the waist - pants, shorts (hopefully you don't own these anyway - beachwear excepted), skirts & shoes. And it's worth noting that The Manolo disagrees with me on this one.
But what do we do about white paired with black? Because these shoes are definitely for fall, and are pretty fabulous.

Neiman Marcus is avoiding the entire white dilemma and recommending red accents for fall. You can go traditional with a twist in a pair of Manolo Mary Janes, but the FG prefers these lambskin peeptoes - if you're going to accent with red, it should be with a really interesting shoe.

  • I am also in favor of the no-white post-Labor Day rule. Both grandmas really hammered this into me -- I have it in my head that white is only acceptable if it's part of a uniform, an office/business shirt, or gym wear. So that's what I practice! Not that I wear much white anyway...

But I always thought cream/crème and other off-white shades don't count (plaid skirt, crème-colored sweater, boots, scarf = good fall outfit). And those shoes look crème to me!

  • I decide it definitely applies below the waist. Above - well, no one's going to tell me I can't wear a white t-shirt whenever I choose. Jury's still out on my white jacket - I adore it, but I may have to pack it away.

Anything not pure, ice white is fine for fall/winter - I have a great winter-white ensemble - cashmere v-neck sweater, wool wide-legged pants & high ivory stilettos - that rocks. When it's not raining.

  • I disagree. The no-white-after-Labor Day rule is the product of another era and should only apply to women of that era. Pure white in mid-winter is fresh, thrilling, even rebellious. But that whole you-can't-revive-a-trend-if-you-wore-it-the-first-time rule? I'm all over that. You won't see me in pegged jeans ever again.

  • So perhaps this is a California vs. Northwest/East Coast thing? Meaning in places where there is weather, the rule applies, but if there's a chance it will be at least 70 on a daily basis, not so much?

  • I always assumed it was loosely based on weather: wear white when it's sunny and dry. (In theory, that's summer! Not so much in reality.) And it's impractical to wear light colors in the rain and mud the rest of the year.

    Oooohhh... 70 degree weather...

  • Must be.

My cousin (from West Hartford, CT) was shocked to find girls wearing velvet to a Bat Mitzvah in Florida, even though the event took place in December. Since there was no snow on the ground, she thought velvet was inappropriate.

I have a pair of black velvet tuxedo pants that are just too fabulous not to wear around the holidays...even if there will never be snow on the ground around here (yay!). Laws vary from state to state, why shouldn't the laws of fashion?
