Embarrassment of Riches

There's really unlimited material when it comes to figure skaters and the costumes they wear. Colours no reasonable woman would be caught dead in on the street are somehow appropriate as they soar over a plain white background?

But the focus today is on unfortunately named Irina Slutskaya. Please, please don't wear pants, ladies. It's an unfortunate silhouette, and, when your hair is short and bowl cut, makes you look like a 14 year old boy. It didn't look good on Debi Thomas in 1988 and it doesn't look good now.

  • I'm not sure that the problem is with pants, or stretch velvet pantsuits. I'd argue that this is not much worse than wisps of organza which blow unflatteringly between ones legs and only appear to pleasing when one is standing still.

  • As Debi wore /pants/ almost 20 years ago, it's not exactly a case of 'Finally.' And I also don't think we're at a place in feminism where just wearing pants, on or off the ice, is a particularly significant statement.

There are definitely issues with the clothing choices made by figure skaters, male and female alike - I found Sasha Cohen's costume almost as visually challenging than Irina's pantsuit, and for completely different reasons. As Michelle Kwan has demonstrated,it is possible to combine artistry and fashion sense in a skating costume, and that's all I'm asking for. And if you're going to be the only woman on the ice in pants, please choose the location of your sequins carefully.
